Clay is the son of an Air Force helicopter pilot. As a young man, he served in the United States Army as a Cavalry Scout in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Fort Bliss, Texas.
During Law School, he served in the United States Army Reserves in Rockford, Illinois. He received an honorable discharge in 1990. He is currently a member of the American Legion Post 99 in Sycamore, Illinois.
